Active Release Technique (A.R.T.)

Active Release Techniques, commonly known as ART, is a specialized soft tissue treatment designed to address problems involving muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. It is a non-invasive, hands-on approach that focuses on finding areas of restricted tissue, tension, adhesions, or irritation that may be contributing to pain, tightness, weakness, numbness, or limited movement. ART providers use specific contact points combined with guided patient movement to help restore normal tissue motion and improve function.

What makes A.R.T. different?

ART is different from many other soft tissue techniques since it is not just general massage or broad pressure over a painful area. ART is highly specific and anatomy-based. The provider evaluates how a particular muscle, tendon, ligament, fascia, or nerve is moving, then applies targeted pressure while the patient actively moves through a specific motion. This combination of precision, movement, and tissue tension allows the provider to treat the involved structure more directly rather than simply working around the area of pain.

How does it help?

ART can be especially helpful for people dealing with overuse injuries, repetitive stress, sports-related pain, nerve irritation, or chronic tightness that has not fully responded to stretching, massage, or rest alone. Because the technique is movement-based, it fits well with a performance and rehabilitation approach. The goal is not only to reduce discomfort, but also to improve mobility, restore better movement patterns, and help patients get back to doing the activities they enjoy with less pain and better function.

At O’Bryan Performance Chiropractic, ART is used as part of a bigger treatment plan that may include chiropractic care, rehabilitation, corrective exercise, and performance-based movement strategies. This allows us to address both the soft tissue restriction and the movement pattern that may have contributed to the problem in the first place.
